How Emerging Biometrics Are Expanding Digital Identity

A new approach to biometric authentication

Biometric authentication is evolving beyond established methods such as facial recognition and fingerprint scanning. As fraud techniques become increasingly sophisticated, the focus is shifting toward more adaptive and continuous ways of confirming the users. This evolution is the growing exploration of biometric signals: Monaco-based startup Monacoeur is developing a system that uses cardiac signals to verify identity, reflecting a growing interest in new ways to protect digital interactions.

Monacoeur uses high-frequency sensors operating at 1,000 Hz to capture heart signals, which are then analysed using artificial intelligence. Its prototype bracelets are reportedly being used at several French banks to authenticate transactions. Monacoeur is also seeking partnerships with local Monaco institutions to further test and develop its technology.

Although the technology is still evolving, its emergence highlights an important development in the digital identity market: heartbeat-based authentication should not be seen as a replacement for established biometric methods, but as another example of how the market is expanding.

Why new biometric technologies matter

Every authentication method has its own strengths and limitations. Facial recognition and fingerprint scanning are already established in many digital identity processes, but innovation continues as the industry looks for ways to make impersonation and fraud more difficult.

Emerging technologies, including heartbeat-based authentication and behavioural biometrics, represent different approaches to this challenge. Rather than relying exclusively on a person’s physical characteristics, some technologies explore signals that are more difficult to imitate or reproduce consistently.

This is particularly relevant to Facephi’s expertise in biometric authentication, including Behavioural Biometrics. By analysing behavioural patterns that can be difficult to replicate, these technologies offer another way to assess whether a digital interaction is consistent with legitimate user activity.

Another key advantage of emerging biometric technologies is the potential for continuous authentication. Rather than requiring users to repeatedly verify their identity, these technologies could continuously monitor biometric signals in the background, providing an additional layer of security with minimal effort from the user. This could also help detect fraud that occurs in the middle of a session, such as when an unauthorized person takes over an already authenticated account or device.

This represents an opportunity to explore how continuous authentication could complement its existing identity verification solutions, helping protect users not only at the onboarding level, but throughout their entire digital journey.

From new technology to broader market opportunities

The emergence of heartbeat biometrics is not evidence that established methods are becoming obsolete. Instead, it signals that digital identity is developing into a broader ecosystem in which different technologies may be used.

The opportunity lies in understanding this evolution: monitoring new developments, identifying complementary technologies and creating new applications for biometric authentication.

Ultimately, the success of an authentication technology will depend not only on how innovative it is, but also on whether it can deliver reliable security, a practical user experience and measurable value in real-world environments.

As the range of biometric technologies continues to grow, organizations that understand both their potential and their limitations will be better positioned to build secure, adaptable and trustworthy digital identity systems.
